Following the Meeting of Environment Ministers on 28th July 2017, we failed to see a national-scale announcement of a ban on lightweight bags, as NSW blocked any advance.

But we are still moving forwards with recent announcements acheiving victories for our oceans!

In July 2017, the major supermarkets committed to a phase out of single-use plastic bags mid-2018.

The following months saw even more exciting announcements from Premiers Mark McGowan & Daniel Andrews who have since announced that both WA and Victoria will follow the rest of Australia and ban single-use plastic bags!

In July 2017, the major supermarkets committed to a phase out of single-use plastic bags mid-2018.

The following months saw even more exciting announcements from Premiers Mark McGowan & Daniel Andrews who have since announced that both WA and Victoria will follow the rest of Australia and ban single-use plastic bags!

But, unfortunately the fight isn't over. With only one state left to take action, we need to continue the fight for our oceans! We are asking you to send an email to your local MP asking them to increase the pressure on the NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian

Please ask the NSW Premier to commit to a ban on lightweight single-use plastic bags. Single use plastics are a waste of resources and too often end up entering the environment as litter.

Two states and two territories already have bag bans in place. Queensland is bringing in their best practise lightweight, single-use plastic bag ban (including so-called biodegradables) in mid 2018 and Western Australia is following suit, and now Victoria has announced a ban on plastic bags is coming and have released a discussion paper called "Reducing the impacts of plastics on the Victorian environment".  That just leaves NSW...

It’s time NSW announced a plan to ban the bag!

The NSW community is ready to make the switch to reusable shopping bags and we want to see leadership from the state government. Action announced by key retailers will help but this doesn't cover all bags - and the National Retailers Association has called for a law to cover all outlets.
