From Promise To Policy: Stop Packaging Waste & Plastic Pollution.

I support Boomerang Alliance and Kal Glanznig's call for the following five measures and ask the Commonwealth Government to act:

  1. A mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for packaging—introduced by 2026, requiring producers to fully fund the collection and recovery of their packaging, with mandatory reduction and reuse targets. 
  2. Fastrack a national producer responsibility scheme for soft plastics, ensuring mandatory membership where producers cover the full cost of soft plastics recovery. 
  3. Continued regulation by Commonwealth, State, and Territory Governments to phase out problem plastics and harmful chemicals while mandating reusable packaging systems to reduce waste at the source.
  4. New rules requiring all major stadiums, public events and government precincts to eliminate single use packaging by switching to reusable cups and containers.
  5. A personal commitment by all elected Commonwealth Members of Parliament to ditch single-use cups and takeaway containers by switching to reuse.

It’s time for bold action to stop plastic pollution at the source.
