It’s time to tackle plastic pollution—starting with stronger packaging laws.

Most single-use plastic packaging ends up in landfill or as litter. It’s time for the next Commonwealth Government to take action by introducing new laws that require producers to reduce, reuse, or recover the packaging they place on the market.

With 85% of Australians concerned about plastic pollution*, we need real packaging solutions that lower household costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and protect human and environmental health. This means removing unnecessary single-use packaging and ensuring any packaging used is collected, recovered, and reused.

Make Packaging Waste a 2025 Election Issue!

I support the following five measures and call on the new Commonwealth Government to act:

  1. A mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for packaging—introduced by 2026, requiring producers to fully fund the collection and recovery of their packaging, with mandatory reduction and reuse targets.
  2. Fastrack a national collection scheme for soft plastics, ensuring producers cover the cost of recycling of all soft plastics.
  3. Continued regulation by Commonwealth, State, and Territory Governments to phase out problem plastics while mandating reusable packaging systems to reduce waste at the source.
  4. New rules requiring all major stadiums and public events to eliminate single use packaging by switching to reusable cups and containers.
  5. A personal commitment by all elected Commonwealth Members of Parliament to ditch single-use cups and takeaway containers by switching to reuse

It’s time for bold action to stop plastic pollution at the source.
