We are urging governments to take the next step in strengthening Australia’s Container Refund Schemes by Increasing the refund amount to a minimum of 20c per container.  And all states should include wine and spirits in glass bottles, in their scheme.

These changes would deliver significant benefits for the community, the economy, and the environment:

- Stronger participation: 84% of Australians have said they would return more containers if the refund increased to 20c.
- Higher recycling rates: A 20c refund could lift return rates to 90%, resulting in more than 1.3 billion additional containers recycled each year and cutting the value of resources lost to landfill by 70%.
- Local jobs: Increasing the refund could create a 12% boost in recycling jobs, strengthening regional and community employment.
- A clean recycling stream for plastic, glass and metal: the containers are one of the cleanest and most valuable recycling streams, making them vital to building a circular economy.

Importantly, now that a refund system is in place, households will recoup any additional costs when they return containers. This means the scheme is not only good for the planet, but also good for people’s wallets, local communities and charities.

How we use the data you enter on this form
